Frequently asked questions.

  • Send us a message Info@lhc-dsm.com or call us at (515) 361-7614

  • During your first session, the therapist will typically ask about your background, current concerns, and goals for therapy. It’s a chance to get to know each other and understand how therapy can best support you. This appointment usually lasts 45-55 minutes.

  • Once your first appointment is scheduled, your therapist will email you the intake paperwork to read over and complete. Please have this done at least 24 hours before your first appointment.

  • Therapy duration varies depending on individual needs and goals. Some people may see progress in just a few sessions, while others may benefit from ongoing support over a more extended period.

  • We believe that EVERYONE can benefit from therapy. It provides a space for growth, healing, and self-discovery.

  • There are many types of therapy, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), EMDR, psychodynamic therapy, and couples therapy, among others. Your therapist will work with you to find the best approach for your needs.

  • Yes, therapy is confidential. What you share with your therapist is protected by privacy laws, though there are a few exceptions (e.g., risk of harm to yourself or others, child/elderly abuse and neglect, and court order).

  • It's crucial to find a therapist you feel comfortable with. Research tells us that 70% of therapy effectiveness is attributed to your relationship with your therapist rather than the specific techniques used. We offer a free consultation/introductory session to help you decide if you and the therapist would be a good fit. During this meeting, consider factors such as how you feel while there, their approach to therapy, experience, and areas of expertise.

  • Typically, therapy starts with weekly or bi-weekly sessions, but the frequency can vary based on your needs and goals. Over time, you and your therapist may adjust the schedule as progress is made.

  • Therapy is a process, and while some people experience relief quickly, meaningful change takes time. It’s normal for progress to happen gradually as you work through your concerns.

  • It’s okay to take your time. Your therapist will create a safe, non-judgmental space for you, and you can share at your own pace. It's important to feel comfortable, and we will do our best to support you through any discomfort.

  • The cost of sessions varies depending on your insurance. If you call the number on the back of your insurance card, they will tell you precisely what your responsibility will be. While we charge $195-$225 per hour, insurance plans cover a significant portion, and most clients pay $0-$40 per session.
